Ludwig Doebbler and his brother, Wilhelm, immigrated to Fredericksburg in 1852 from Prussia. The brothers traveled under their uncle’s name, Franke, because they had been involved in some political unrest in Prussia. Wilhelm settled in Fredericksburg where he became a successful merchant and writer, and opened the first cigar store and tavern.
In 1853, Ludwig’s wife, Mathilda, and their four children immigrated to Fredericksburg. Mathilda was a seamstress in town. Ludwig and his oldest son, Richard, completed construction to the first part of the home in 1857 or 1858. It was single story, solid rock measuring 12′ by 40′ and was composed of a kitchen, fireplace and sleeping room. The home had dirt floors, solid wood shutters, split log doors, and split cypress shingles made up the roof.
A few years later, Ludwig and Richard completed two large additions to the home. First, they added a 15′ by 30′ long one and a half story room in front of the old sleeping room. The first story was a parlor with fireplace and the upper level was a bedroom. The second addition was a 12′ by 28′ long one and a half story room oriented 90 degrees in front of the kitchen, making the home into the “L” shape we see today. While we don’t know for sure the date of the additions, we do know they were completed before 1874; and the front porch was added after 1897.
